at times
so desperate for
meaning
we look for it
in every facet from
cloud formations
to green traffic lights
are we not
so eager for
direction
we read every passing
mile marker aloud
yet we are no longer
taught cartography
nor the reason for the craft
we have learned patience
but never told
what we are waiting for
we are told
to hold our breath
but never the reason
for ceasing to inhale
in the clouds
I see everything from
dragons to seashells
to angry faces in mid scream
some nights I drive
watching the countdown
of miles as I get closer
and closer to an unknown
destination
I hold my breath and watch
the clock to see how
much patience I have
and I question
are we not
all questioning
purpose
without any faith of finding
true answers
“Are we not” is previously published in Verse Virtal (2023).
I think there is no purpose at all. We are a self-sustaining life form. We grow, we mate, we propagate. Our purpose is survival. But we have long lives, and time to think. Without a purpose, we’d get bored. So, we manufature another purpose. Maybe it’s winning at sports. Maybe it’s reading 100 books a year, or traveling to a different country each year. Maybe it’s teaching. Maybe it’s helping others. Whatever it is, it has to be something that makes us happy. For some, it has to be an intellectual pusuit, like music or math. For other’s its climbing mountains. Really, after our physical needs are met, we’re just combating boredom, but a purpose occupies our time satisfactorily. Maybe.

I think we create our purpose, the same way we create our world. In the end, it is up to the individual what they want out of their little time on earth.
