Poetry Prompt: Animal Guides

This morning I saw a coyote and two roadrunners on my morning run, and since I am not one to deny fate, it seemed like a good spark for writing.

For today’s prompt: What animals are appearing to you today? What might they symbolize? What message might they carry? Why do you think they appeared to you? Try to look beyond the animals you see daily (pets, ants, etc), and see what unexpected creature may appear.

Poetry Prompt: Ekphastic Writing Photography

Today’s prompt is an ekphrastic prompt regarding the pictures that are attached. There are many definitions of ekphrastic poetry, but for the purpose of today’s exercise, we will use the simplified definition of “art created from other art.”

Take a look at the pictures posted and choose one that catches your intention. Write about what the image inspires, what thoughts come to mind, what themes or lesson are portrayed. There is no wrong answer here. Just follow your inspiration and see if creates poem.

Be creative and see what comes about.

Poetry Prompt: Letter to Self

Today’s prompt is an oldie, but a goodie.

Write a letter to your younger self. It could be a letter to your inner child, a letter to you the night before you get married/divorced/graduate/etc, or a letter to yourself half an hour before you ate something you should not have.

What would you say to yourself, if given a chance?

As an example, click here to read my poem “A letter to myself at 16.

Note: I wrote that poem over ten years ago, when I was in my early 30’s. I wonder what I would tell myself differently if I wrote it today.
