A Warning

Katrina Kaye

when you get older,

the words go.

they slip,

scatter,

strip from pen and page

stick in mouth,

in throat,

in mind.

they float,

flimsy as silk ribbons,

and frustrate the mind.

when you get older,

much rots.

the knees

crackle and pop,

the back

sways and scoops,

wrists stiffen.

callous thickens,

heels crack

in the cold.

if there

is not a pen

for your arthritic

hands to curl around,

you may never

hold one again.

if you don’t repeat

the words,

you forget how to

pronounce them.

forget what they mean.

cling to the words,

before they slip,

like silk ribbons,

from your grasp.

Orange

Katrina Kaye

You told me once,

when you
found me
at two am

sitting cross legged
on linoleum floor,

pulling apart
sections
of an orange
to suck on the slices,

you can’t decide
which part of me

to forge
into a locket
so you can
fold yourself
inside,

held within
for always.

“Orange” is previously published in the collection, my verse…, published by Swimming with Elephants Publications, LLC in 2012.

ROSEMARY

“There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance; pray, love, remember.”

remember me
when you least
expect it
in the scent
of rosemary and
the red of eyelid
closed to the sun
and I will
remember you
scrawled
in cursive on
forearm in the
tender spot
where the sun
never reaches
isn’t that
what we all
want?
the best parts
of us to stay alive
in the hearts of
those we love
our words
remembered
hummed like
lullaby
tasted like
salvation

BE CONTENT

with sunlight
through kitchen window

the recorded
sounds of violins and wine
from a stemless glass
with a smudge
of lipstick on the rim

understand every gift
at your fingertips
is hard earned
and the loneliness created
that too
is what you invited

be not disappointed
with each gift
you have wrought

in an attempt to surrender,
seclude to kitchen table
ask the weight on
shoulders to retire
enjoy…
